Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyra Livingston.
Hi Kyra, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started singing when I was a child and performed in talent shows at my elementary school. I always had a passion for music, but I didn’t take it seriously until high school. I went to St. Augustine high school for the arts program and auditioned for the guitar and choir ensembles. I got accepted and stayed active within the ensembles for four years.
Once I reached my senior year, I decided to become a music major with a focus on voice in college and make this a career. While in college, I decided to quit my waitressing job back in 2016 and do music full time. While managing a full-time music school schedule, I taught private voice lessons part-time at the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind in St. Augustine for three years teaching blind students.
This was a rewarding position to be in and I learned so much from these students, but I decided to leave FSDB. I’ve been playing shows and private events around Northeast Florida ever since while completing my degree. I now play solo, duo, and I started a five-piece band called Istoria. I hope to release originals very soon!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Music school is hard on you mentally and physically. Many people don’t know, but music majors take between 8-12 classes in their undergraduate degree to graduate in four years, time to yourself is slim to none.
I struggled with this, trying to keep up with the pacing and staying on track to graduate within that time. I decided to take a gap year between my sophomore and junior year to travel and then continued my college career after that.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I play mostly covers at my shows. I play blues, soul, classic rock with a touch of jazz influence. I’m proud of building my fan base and reputation. What sets me apart from others is my knowledge of vocals and what I’m able to do based on the knowledge I have.
I put a twist on songs I’m performing and some audiences believe they are originals due to the sound and creativity.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
To be in this industry, you have to work hard and have the motivation to be successful. Take criticism, listen, and don’t take it personally.
